Sciame was the Construction Manager responsible for the construction of the Medical and Graduate Education Building in Upper Manhattan, an innovative 14-story facility. The project began with the complex demolition of an existing structure, which required detailed planning to mitigate vibrations, noise, and disruptions in the dense urban environment. This careful coordination ensured the safety and uninterrupted functionality of surrounding properties and utilities, particularly the adjacent parking garage, which remained operational throughout construction.
The new building features a steel and concrete frame, engineered to support its transparent façade. Constructed with high-performance glazing, the façade maximizes natural light penetration while maintaining energy efficiency and thermal comfort. This feature was a key factor in the building achieving LEED Gold certification.
Inside, the facility’s principal design strategy was the Study Cascade, which fosters innovation in medical education. It includes technologically advanced lecture halls equipped with integrated AV systems, acoustic treatments, and tiered seating to enhance interactive learning experiences. Computer and anatomy labs are outfitted with robust data infrastructure and specialized ventilation systems, ensuring precision, safety, and reliability in their operations. Additionally, the building features clinical simulation spaces designed to replicate real-world medical scenarios. These spaces are supported by advanced MEP systems, ensuring seamless functionality and authenticity in the training environment. The facility also includes flexible offices and event spaces, designed to accommodate a variety of academic and professional activities. Complementing these spaces are landscaped roof terraces and outdoor areas, which provide opportunities for informal gatherings.
