Sciame was the Construction Manager responsible for the construction of the 6,700 SF retail pavilion. The pavilion houses the gift concession as well as public toilets for the 2 ½ million plus visitors who ferry to the Statue of Liberty each year. Built to Platinum LEED standards, the retail pavilion incorporates many energy saving and sustainability related features including a 1,500 foot deep geothermal well, LED lighting, waterless urinals, a generator which burns excess cooking oil from the food concession, rainwater storage/re-use.
The new Retail Pavilion is built of a steel frame, clad in Cor-Ten, of bolted columns and beams on a 33’ x 33’ grid, with an intermediate column grid every 16’-6” around the building perimeter. Columns rest on poured in place concrete footings, bolted together through steel plates. Exterior footings are four feet in depth; interior footings extend down two feet six inches. This methodology minimizes any impact to the historical fabric of this part of the island should the Pavilion building ever be removed.
