Sciame was the Construction Manager responsible for the renovation of two interconnected landmark buildings, the Frick Collection and the Frick Art Reference Library, located between 70th and 71st Streets on Fifth Avenue.
The Frick Collection, which had housed Henry Frick’s private art collection since the 1930s, underwent its first comprehensive renovation. This project included a complete mechanical system overhaul, expanded the total square footage by 10%, and added 30% more gallery space. It encompassed all types of construction, including excavation, new construction, gut renovation, restoration, and conservation.
The project involved the creation of new exhibition, programming, and conservation spaces within the institution’s footprint. Approximately 35,000 SF of new construction included a small extension and expansion both above and below the existing building. Close coordination with ownership, the design team, and trades was crucial to addressing the project’s complexities and meeting the client’s needs.
